Long Beach Regeneration Plans

Marina World - Jan/Feb 2005

World News - USA - The City of Long Beach, California, is to replace ageing timber dock systems at the Shoreline and Rainbow marinas with a concrete floating dock system from waterfront equipment manufacturer ShoreMaster.

When the 30-month renovation is complete, the downtown marina's ADA-compliant docks will offer around 1,700 full-service single slips ranging from 30-60 feet in length.

The multiple phase project will be installed by a five-company team led by Long Beach based general contractor Connolly Pacific Company (CPC), whose 80 years' experience in shore protection and marina construction includes the original installation of the Long Beach marinas back in 1982.

"ShoreMaster had the quality and the capability to perform according to the criteria we were looking for and the service and the benefit we'd like to give our boaters," explained Long Beach marine bureau superintendent, Douglas Parsons.

The design/build proposal selection was led by construction manager Concept Marine Associates and the approach, according to principal engineer Fernando Pages of Tetra Tech - one of the five companies in the CPC team - has created opportunities for innovation. He cites unique engineering solutions that include a cost-effective float system designed to use the existing pile guide template and finger piers modified to allow for precise adjustments.

ShoreMaster will supply the marina's patented post-tensioned floating concrete dock system from its production plant and distribution center in Adelanto, California.

A more detailed feature article on the Long Beach project will appear in the March/April issue.
